Fast of Daniel
Do you want to be more intelligent, have more self-control, develop your intimacy with God, be more sensitive to God's voice, and grow spiritually?
If so, the Fast of Daniel is for you.
What is the Fast of Daniel, why do it, and how to do it?
Let's understand what the Fast of Daniel is and where this name comes from.
Daniel was a young Hebrew who had been taken captive to Babylon, like so many other Hebrews. Some of which were recruited to serve in the king’s palace. They would be trained, given clothing, food, and teaching.
He realized that the foods and drinks of Babylon would harm him, both physically and spiritually. There was wine, feasting and idle talk. Daniel didn't want to become a Babylonian; he wanted to maintain his identity as a young man of God. He didn't want to blend in with those environments, people, and customs.
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.” (Daniel 1:8)
So, he started with the food, but he extended it to his behavior and friendships. He decided to remain upright, despite the environment in which he lived. He isolated himself and asked the chief of the young men to change his diet.
“Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance be examined before you, and the appearance of the young men who eat the portion of the king’s delicacies; and as you see fit, so deal with your servants.... and at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king’s delicacies.” (Daniel 1:12-15).
In other words, whoever truly participates in the Fast of Daniel will notice a difference already in the first few days.
How is the Fast of Daniel relevant today?
In our days, the Fast of Daniel is not a fast from food. As mentioned, Daniel started with food, but in all his behavior, he isolated himself from Babylon.
Regarding what you eat, you should consult your nutritionist and your doctor. The Fast of Daniel is not about your body, but about your mind; your brain. What do you "ingest" with your eyes and ears? And what do you do with what is in your mind? This is the Fast of Daniel.
We are living days where people are mixed up in social networks, following many people, looking at the lives of others. It has never been more important not to be contaminated by the "wine" of this world; customs, beliefs, words, and information that pollutes people and makes them a copy of the world.
Society today is totally anti-God, and if you don't take care of yourself, you will become like everyone else. Sadly, there are people who call themselves “christians” but there is no difference between them and unbelievers. They have already blended in. They are in the midst of “Babylon” and have become like the “Babylonians.”
How to do the Fast of Daniel?
We will start on Wednesday, December 10 until Wednesday, December 31.
During these 21 days, you will only access information from this world that is truly necessary for your work and studies. Beyond that, you will cut out all consumption of useless information. Including: social media, browsing shopping websites (that make you want products), all kinds of games (video games, football, anything that distracts you), secular music, worldly news, and TV series. You will discard all of that.
You will select information that is useful (especially information that brings you closer to God). You can follow Christian content, spiritual books (especially the Bible). The Gospel of John, for example, has 21 chapters. You can read one chapter a day. Listen to messages of faith that uplift and instruct you. Go to church more often to learn about the Word of God. Pray more and keep your mind connected to God (even if you don't close your eyes or kneel down, your spirit is in constant conversation with God).
What will you notice during these 21 days?
You will experience less anxiety, less worry, and less distraction, you will hear God's voice more, and this will be reflected in your life and your decisions.
Would you like to do the Fast of Daniel?
Ask God what you should do. The Spirit of God will show you how you can please Him.
These will be 21 days to disconnect from the world, detoxify ourselves from useless information, and connect more with God to hear His voice.
