What is the greatest sin we can commit?

After the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, He rebuked His disciples and confronted them because of their unbelief and hardness of heart. (Mark 16:14)

They were unbelieving twice:

Firstly, they did not believe everything the Lord had told them several times before going to the cross —that He would rise again on the third day.

Secondly, the witnesses who saw the resurrected Lord reported it to the eleven; even so, they did not believe them. Because of this attitude, Jesus severely rebuked them.

Unbelief is the greatest sin because it casts doubt on the Word and the character of God.

His Word should be sufficient for us. He is God and does not need to prove Himself to us.

Even so, He confirms His Words with works:

“If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” John 10:37-38

Yet many did not believe in the Word, neither the works of God.

And if we do not believe even what our own eyes see, what hope remains?

“Jesus said to him, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.’” Mark 9:23
