The Lord’s Supper is a ceremony instituted by the Lord Jesus Himself, before His sacrifice on the cross:
“And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.’” — Luke 22:19-20
Thus, the bread and the cup are an opportunity for all those who want to sit at the table with the Lord Jesus and partake of what He offers.
It is a symbol that reminds us of what He did on the cross and the price He had to pay for our redemption. Therefore, this requires obedience to His Word from us.
As the apostle Paul observed:
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” — 1 Corinthians 11:26
He added that the Lord’s Supper is a time for self-reflection and for making a decision regarding how one has been living before God:
“Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” — 1 Corinthians 11:27-29
Therefore, take advantage of this opportunity for reconciliation or renewing your covenant with God. This ceremony reminds us of forgiveness, communion, and spiritual strengthening.
