Month to Combat the Devourer

The financial and family problems many people face often have a spiritual root. This spirit acts as a destructive force against the work of their hands.
A person works hard, strives, and earns money, but then the devourer comes and takes it away. As a result, they are left with little or nothing, and often fall into debt.
Many people think that fighting the devourer simply means praying. However, the devourer is rebuked in a different way—it is rebuked when we honor God first.
“What the chewing locust left, the swarming locust has eaten; what the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten; and what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten.” Joel 1:4
God instructed prophet Joel to speak to the people and help them understand that the hardships they were facing were not natural circumstances. There was a spiritual reason behind them.
The land had been devastated because the people had turned away from God.
It is God who drives out the devourer, but only when people return to Him. When we put God first above anything or anyone else, He takes responsibility for rebuking the devourer on our behalf.
God did not create us to suffer. Yet why is there so much misery in the world? Because many people are living far from Him.
“Consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly; gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.” Joel 1:14
This month of June, we will have the Three Sundays of the Sacred Assembly, beginning on Sunday, June 7. During these three Sundays, we will unite in fast and prayer, asking God to forgive our distractions, faults, and misdeeds, and for the times we have failed to put Him first.
Together, we will cry out to God for His mercy and forgiveness, believing that as we return to Him, the devourer will be rebuked from our lives and families.
Below, you can watch the story of Alexsandro de Souza, who shares that, given the situation he found himself in, he had lost all hope and desire to live:
