Be Aware of the Signs

This month of June, the Caleb Group launches the campaign “Be Aware of the Signs” dedicated to raising awareness about violence against the elderly.

This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of respecting, caring for, and protecting older adults through educational and preventive measures.

The initiative aims to encourage society to identify possible signs of violence or negligence against the elderly, as well as to strengthen a culture of reporting and providing support. After all, protecting those who have contributed so much to society is a responsibility we all share.

How to participate in the campaign?

1. Pay attention to the signs.

To identify these situations, the first step is to observe changes that may indicate that an elderly person is facing some type of violence, negligence, or abandonment. Among the main signs are:

a.       Changes in behavior;

b.      Constant sadness, fear, or isolation;

c.       Poor hygiene;

d.      Frequent injuries.

When identifying situations like these, it is important to seek guidance and offer support to the elderly person.

2. Practice active listening.

In addition to observing the signs, listening attentively is also a way to protect them. After all, many elderly people live with situations of violence in silence, whether out of fear, shame, or emotional and financial dependence on the abuser.

Therefore, showing genuine interest, listening to their stories, and providing a safe environment for conversation can make all the difference.

3. Do not remain silent in the face of violence.

If you notice any situation that suggests mistreatment, negligence, or abuse, do not ignore the signs. Contact the appropriate authorities and file a report.

Protecting the elderly is a duty of the entire society.
